William Gillette, the writer/actor (and Tryon resident, after whom Gillette Woods is named), wrote this play for the stage in 1899, adapting Sir Author Conan Doyle's writing and character of Sherlock Holmes. Gillette's play was later adapted in 1916 onto film, heralded as the silent era's most complex work. Gillette famously played the titular character in his adaptation, and was responsible for the aesthetic additions of the iconic Deerstalker cap and pipe that are so famously associated with the character. This print of the film has been digitally restored for our modern projectors, and is a beautiful work of a bygone era.
